As you get older it is very important to maintain a good level of fitness. In this article we will show you different ways in which you can keep yourself in good shape. Apply the following advice on fitness to your every day life, so as you age, you can better adapt to the changes in your body.

If you’re lucky enough to live near your local grocery store, an easy way to get a workout is to walk to the store on your day off instead of taking your car. Grab a basket once you’re inside– getting a cart will make it easy to choose more items than you can easily carry. You can always make multiple trips, or bring the family so everyone can grab a few bags.

Training for a marathon can be no easy feat. Try setting small goals to achieve each week that eventually lead up to being able to run or walk a 5k marathon. For some, walking that distance takes little effort, but for others it can feel like climbing Mount Everest. Take small walks or runs each day and push yourself to make it further and further each week.

Exercising with your dog can be a great motivator. Having to take your dog out can increase the frequency of your workouts as well as your enjoyment. Some health clubs even offer classes or activities that can be done with your pet, such as “doggy yoga”!

Use the start of the fall TV season as a chance to get in shape. We tend to spend a lot of time in front of the TV, especially during the premiere season. Make a resolution to keep yourself active while watching TV. Lift weights, walk in place, or use an exercise bike while your show is on, during the commercial break drop and do 20 pushups or sit ups.

Practice “Four-Square Breathing” after your workout while stretching. Breath in for four seconds, then breath out for four seconds, and repeat for three minutes. “Four-Square Breathing” increases your lung capacity and reduces stress when done properly, which helps you relax after your workout, and get ready for the rest of your day.

Work on keeping your muscles limber by holding your stretches. For those under 40, try holding your stretches for about 30 seconds. For those over 40, try holding them for about 60 seconds. The reason for the time difference is that muscles lose their pliability as you grow older and can become strained or receive injury more easily than when you’re younger.

You can work your back out harder with a little different hand placement. While you are doing lat pull-downs, instead of wrapping your thumbs around the bar, place them alongside your index fingers on top. Doing this will make your back work harder because your arm muscles are doing less work.

Taking advantage of seasonal sports can make fitness much more entertaining and rewarding. If you’re in a region that receives a lot of snow on the winter, try your hand at skiing. During the summer, go for a long swim every day. Seasonal sports give you something to look forward to, making exercising more fun.

To prevent injury when working out, you should stretch after you’ve sufficiently warmed up your muscles. Do some cardiovascular exercises (jogging, running, bicycling, etc.) first and then stretch your muscles. If you stretch too early, you can leave yourself vulnerable to pulled or torn muscles. Stretching after cardiovascular exercise, also helps to improve flexibility.

Change the exercises around that you do often. By alternating exercises, you will avoid boredom and prevent your body from plateauing. Combine high intensity exercises like kick boxing with low or medium intensity exercises such as walking or jogging. Keeping it fresh will keep you interested as well as helping your body.

If you are an avid runner, a great tip is to try to run faster over shorter distances. The reason for this is because it will help to improve your running form. This will not only help you perform better, but also, you will not be as likely to injure yourself.

A fun and effective way to help you get fit is to purchase a soccer ball to kick around. Playing soccer is one of the best sports for shaping up because there is so much running involved. You can just play with your friends if you don’t want to play competitively.

Go to the head of the class. In your favorite fitness class, don’t be timid – choose a spot right in the front. It will make you work harder knowing that everyone behind you is watching you and seeing yourself working hard in the mirror will boost your sense of accomplishment.

Focus on a plan and stick to it. Working on plans such as a upper body/lower body split can be beneficial to serious fitness because it helps portions of the body rest on off days. Muscles are living cells and grow during periods of intense stress, exercise in this case. This growth, however, requires a rest period; the rest period is an important feature of our body that upper/lower splits make a note of.

Finding little opportunities for exercise and fitness in our lives, can make a big difference in how we look and feel. If your job requires you to sit at a desk or computer for hours at a time, then make it a point to get up and move every hour. Whether it is carrying a report to a colleague or walking a lap around the halls of your office, take the time to vary your routine and get your blood flowing. Activity has the added benefit of revving up the brain, so you are likely to be even more productive when you get back to work.

As was discussed in the beginning of this article, as you age your body will go through many changes. It is very important to understand that as we age it becomes harder to maintain your fitness level. Apply the advice from above, and you will live a life with a lot less aches and pains.
